Criteria For Admission

Criteria for admission to AIS-R include age, passing entrance assessments, previous school records, English language proficiency, learning potential, availability of program and ability to make tuition and fee payments.  In addition, while students of all nationalities are encouraged to apply to AIS-R, enrollment priority will be given to those students who are North American passport holders and have a verifiable requirement to an American Education.  Please note that while our teachers differentiate their instruction and support individual student needs to the best of their ability, AIS-R does not provide a Special Needs Program for students with significant learning needs.

Admission Process

All applicants must first complete and submit an application with all the required documentation in order to begin the admissions process.  When applicants are physically in Riyadh, they should contact the Admissions Office and schedule the admissions assessment.  However, the assessment process typically begins only after a seat is available for the applicant. This means, therefore, that if there are more applicants than available seats, students are placed on a waiting list in the order that their applications were received.  They will only be contacted by the Admissions Office to schedule an assessment when a seat becomes available. All applicants, regardless of nationality, must complete the admissions assessment prior to being admitted to AIS-R. Students who successfully complete the admissions assessment will be admitted to AIS-R and will receive an acceptance letter.  Students may not begin class until they receive written confirmation of acceptance and the tuition invoice has been paid.  Tuition for new students admitted prior to the tuition deadline must be paid when tuition is due in order to secure the seat.  Tuition for students admitted after the tuition due date must be paid within two business days of acceptance.

Age of Students

AIS-R uses the following age guidelines for admission:

Age Grade Placement
3 years old Pre-Kindergarten
4 years old Kindergarten I
5 years old Kindergarten II
6 years old Grade 1
7 years old Grade 2
8 years old Grade 3
9 years old Grade 4
10 years old Grade 5
11 years old Grade 6
12 years old Grade 7
13 years old Grade 8
14 years old Grade 9
15 years old Grade 10
16 years old Grade 11
17 years old Grade 12

The minimum age for admission to Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 1 must be reached before the first of October in the school year for which the child is applying.  New students will be admitted only after verification of the age has been received in the form of either a birth certificate or passport. In other grades, enrollment may be denied if the student's age significantly exceeds the normal average age for his or her grade placement.  All requirements for graduation from AIS-R must be completed before a student's 20th birthday.

Grade Placement

AIS-R seeks to make the most appropriate placement for each student based on his or her age, academic level, and social and emotional development, while at the same time adhering to Board policy.

All students are individually assessed by counselors.  The counselors discuss the results of the assessment with the Principal, who recommends the appropriate grade placement.  AIS-R closely observes and monitors the grade placement for all new students for at least a three-week period to ensure that students have been appropriately placed.  AIS-R reserves the right to reassign students to another grade level if it is clear within the first three weeks that a student is not appropriately placed.

English Language Proficiency

Students are tested in English as part of the admissions process, and those accepted whose English language proficiency is still developing will be placed in an English Language Learners (ELL) support program on the basis of AIS-R policies and the availability of space.  There is an additional fee for this program.

No minimum level of English language proficiency is required for admission into grades 1-4.  However, students will only be accepted into grades 5 - 8 if they test at the intermediate level of English language proficiency for their grade level.  Students applying to grades 9-12 will only be accepted if they have grade level fluency in English, as there is no ELL support available in these grades.

Please note that students requiring full ELL services may not be admitted after the first semester of the 5th or 8th grade, as there may not be enough time to adequately prepare them for the next grade level.

Students enrolled in the ELL program will receive additional support from a specially trained ELL instructor.  The exact form of this support will vary based on each student's specific needs, and will usually take place with the ELL support teacher during regular classes.  At times, however, ELL teachers will work one-on-one with students on specific skills or content outside of regular classes.

Previous Schooling

All new students must provide official documentation of previous school experience, including transcripts, report cards and test scores.  All documents provided must be in English.  AIS-R may request certification of translation from the Consulate of the country in which the student last attended to meet admission requirements.

Admissions Office

The Admissions Office is open from 7:30 AM until 4:00PM daily, Saturday to Wednesday from mid-August until mid-June.  Appointments are not required; however, it is advisable to call ahead to schedule a school tour if desired.  The Admissions Office also invites inquiries by telephone, fax and e-mail.  AIS-R has rolling admissions and accepts students throughout the school year with early registration for the next year occurring during the month of May and two weeks before school opens in August.
