Criteria For Admission

Based on availabel space, enrollment priority will be given to those students who are North American passport holders and have a verifiable requirement for an American education.  All nationalities are encouraged to apply and those students not demonstrating a verifiable requirement based on citizenship will be referred to an Admissions Committee where admission is decided on a case by case basis.

Criteria for enrollment include age, entrance exam, previous school records, English language proficiency, learning achievement, availablity of program, ability to make tuition and fee payments, and a verifiable requirement for an American education.

Age of Students

AIS-R uses age guidelines for admission as shown in the table below.  The minimum age for admission to Kindergarten 1 and II must be reached before the first of October in the school year for which the child is to be enrolled.  New students will be admitted only after verification of the age has been received in the form of either a birth certificate or passport.  In other grades, enrollment may be denied if the student's age significantly exceeds the normal average for his or her grade placement.  All requirements for graduation from AIS-R must be completed before a student's 20th birthday.

Grade Placement

AIS-R seeks to make the most appropriate placement for each student based on his or her age as well as academic and social and emotional development within Board policy guidelines.

Kindergarten and grade 1 students are individually assessed by counselors.  The counselors meet with the parents and recommend the appropriate grade placement.

Each new student for grades 2 through 12 will be asked to complete a written entrance test.  In some instances, students may be asked to return for additional testing or interviewing.  AIS-R closely observes and monitors the grade placement for all new students for at least a three -week period to ensure that students have been appropriately placed.

English Language Proficiency

In order for students to fully participate in the school's instructional programs, students are required to have English language proficiency. Students may be admitted without such proficiency provided they satisfy all enrollment regulations and enroll in AIS-R's ELL program, subject to availability of space.  Students at the high school level must be fully proficient in English as there is no ELL program available in grades 9-12.

Previous Schooling

All new students must provide official documentation of previous school experience, including transcripts, report cards and test scores.  All documents must be in English.  AIS-R may request certification of translation from the Consulate of the country in which the student last attended to meet admission requirements.
