Grade 5 serves students who have turned 10 by October 1.  Teachers focus on reading using a balanced literacy approach, and regular Writer's Workshops and topical research projects give students time to develop this most important skill.  The Everyday Math program gives the students the skills they need to be successful in math and helps them develop problem solving skills and the ability to do math mentally.

Grade 5 students experiment with and discover topics in science within the following units:

  • life processes
  • atmosphere and the solar system
  • kinds of matter
  • Earth systems.

United States history is brought to life when the classes explore historical events and figures. Different types of technologies are integrated into much of fifth grade learning with the help of laptops, three computer labs, cameras, video cameras, video recorders and in class SMART Boards.  Also, students have opportunities to show off learning through events like our Poetry Cafe, the Annual Science Fair, and performances during school assemblies.
