Grading

Physical and Health education is a required course and therefore must be graded.  Students will be given letter grades (A, B, C, D, F and/or Incomplete) each quarter based on the assessment components below.  Students will meet four times per cycle for 85-minute blocks.  Students will meet for three blocks for Physical Education (75% of overall grade) and for one block of Health (25% of overall grade).

Assessment Components

Students will be evaluated and graded on the following components with an emphasis on daily participation and attitude.

Physical Education (75% of overall grade)

Daily Participation (60%)

Students will be graded daily on a 10 point scale for the following:

  • effort
  • attitude
  • enthusiasm
  • proper PE attire
  • a desire to improve
  • punctuality
  • behavior in the locker room
  • sportsmanship
  • cooperation with teacher and peers
  • proper treatment of the equipment

Students may have points deducted from their daily grade fro the following:

  • put downs (insulting other students)
  • misbehavior
  • chewing gum

Repeated negative behaviors will result in disciplinary action.  See student handbook.

Skill Testing and Concept Application (10%)

Students will be tested formally or informally to evaluate skill acquisition and/or improvement for each unit.

  • student's ability to understand and play positions
  • student's ability to accept coaching and instruction
  • student's ability to employ strategy in individual and team situations
  • student's ability to apply techniques/training practices to improve their gameplay

Written Tests (5%)

Students will be given a simple written quiz, based on handouts (posted on Skyward) and the information taught in class, to assess their knowledge of each unit.  Handouts will highlight the history of the activity, etiquette and may also include rules and diagrams.

Health Education (25% of overall grade)

Tests/Larger Assignments (15%)

Students will write unit tests after each unit has been completed.  Tests will usually take the better part of a class to write.  This section may also be used for larger individual or group assignments.  Late assignments will be penalized at 10% off per day.  Students can email late assignments directly to their teacher's school email.

Class Work & Participation (10%)

Although students are afforded the right to pass, students are expected to participate in classroom discussions, answer questions, and participate in presentations.  This area also includes in-class assignments, reflective writing and collaborative work.  Notebooks and/or laptops will be checked from time to time to ensure that students remain on task.  Students are expected to have their pens, pencils and notebook for every health class.

Medical Concerns & Excuses

A written note from a parent or guardian must be presented to the Physical Education instructor in order to be excused from a regular class.  Students with minor ailments are expected to change into Physical Education clothes and participate to the best of their ability.

Prolonged illnesses that prohibit a student from participating in more than two classes require a doctor's note stating the nature and duration of the illness or injury and activities the student is able to do.  A note from the doctor is required to resume participation.

Students who are excused from Physical Education class because of illness will not be permitted to participate in After School Activities which involve physical activity. Any homework, assignment, quiz or tests missed due to illness must be made up within two days (or another agreed upon time) upon a student's return to school.

Although activities are modified during the Holy Month of Ramadan students are expected to change and participate to the best of their ability.  It will be the student's responsibility for obtaining missed work.

Physical Education Uniforms and Appropriate Dress

The Physical Education uniforms are available at the cost of SR 140 for a set of T-shirt and shorts.  Additional T-shirts cost SR 60 and an additional pair of shorts is SR 80.  Students will be expected to buy and wear the uniform for every Physical Education class.  No uniform sharing permitted!

Shoes- proper athletic shoes with arch support worn with socks are required and should be properly laced to ensure a good fit.  Sports sandals, hiking shoes, skating shoes and flat bottom shoes are not acceptable and hazardous.  Long hair must be held back with hair ties for safety.

Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and water bottles are required for outdoor units and should be stored permanently in the student's secure bins.  Students should have stick or roll-on deodorant in the Physical Education bins for use after each class.

Failing to bring the proper Physical Education clothing:

  • Students will be expected to rent PE gear from the PE office: SR 5 and school ID
  • There is a deduction of 5 points off their Daily Grade
  • If the student repeatedly doesn't change for PE, then they are subject to the Middle School Disciplinary Policy.  See school handbook.

Student Assigned PE Lockers

You are assigned a PE bin at the beginning of the year.  It is intended for PE gear, hats, sunscreen, deodorant, HOUSE shirts and small personal belongings.

Students who lose their Physical Education locks will be charged SR 35 for a new replacement lock.  This price is subject to change.

Please do not bring the following items to our locker rooms (they will be confiscated):

  • aerosol/spray deodorants, cologne/perfume, body sprays - these are allergens
  • Book bags!  Lock your bags and valuables in your assigned School locker!

Jewelry and watches should not be worn and should be locked in the bins provided.  Students are responsible for their own valuables.

Always lock your bin!  AIS-R does not take responsibility for lost items.

We look forward to an active and healthy year!
