The social sciences are the disciplines that study human society, culture, and history. Through these disciplines students embark upon an intellectual journey that broadens their horizons, teaches them to think critically and explore the forces that shape our modern world. The social sciences program at AIS-R prepares students to become participants of an interdependent world in which they will be both contributor and beneficiary. While developing skills in writing, research, and content knowledge, the focus of the Social Sciences department is to develop intellectual curiosity. By acquiring a variety of skills, students will embrace the challenge of change, a constant in our global community. At AIS-R, the social sciences include: History, Economics, Business and Management, and Theory of Knowledge. Our department's objective is to foster critical thinking and intellectual curiosity because we believe that these skills will best prepare students for the 21st century. True understanding in the social sciences is gained through application of these skills and the analysis of current and historical data. We believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process. This is accomplished in a variety of methods such as: experiential learning, case-study, analysis of primary and secondary sources, and project-based learning. As part of our goal to create 21st century learners, the integration of technology will be done in a responsible and ethical manner. Through the program of study offered by the social sciences department, students will encounter course content that inspires them to become ethical, responsible, and productive world citizens. The analytical skills fostered within the department promote inter-cultural understanding and respect. Through challenging curricula, students will learn to think creatively, reason critically and communicate effectively. The topics of study will promote international mindedness. The social sciences are a microcosm of life-long learning in the context of real-world scenarios. Social Studies CoursesWorld History I |
