"Annie" Hits the Stage of AIS-R PDF Print E-mail

For the past several weeks, the AIS-R halls have been buzzing with tunes from the Broadway musical, “Annie,” and with good reason.  On December 6th and 7th, “Annie” will hit the Larkin Theater stage in all its glory, as the drama, music and art departments join forces to put on the first full-length musical on our campus in many years.  Fifty middle and high school students, assisted by eight faculty members, have worked very diligently both after school and on Thursdays to prepare this musical extravaganza for the AIS-R community.  From acting, singing and dancing on stage to assisting backstage to playing in the orchestra to creating the elaborate sets, this production is a wonderful example of the artistic collaboration that helps make AIS-R such a unique school.

Set in New York City during the Great Depression of the early 1930s, “Annie” is the heart-warming story of a young orphan (Renata Wilson) who has the opportunity to spend a week as the guest of wealthy industrialist, Oliver

Warbucks (Colin Doig).  The orphan and the billionaire immediately establish a very close bond, with each unknowingly helping the other understand life from vastly different perspectives.  As happy as Annie has become, she still dreams of being reunited with her parents.  When tricksters, Rooster (Dayton Mackirdy) and Lily (Rabecca Riches), hear of the large reward offered for Annie’s parents to come forth, they immediately enlist the help of Rooster’s sister, the cruel orphanage matron Miss Hannigan (Nadine Ghattas), to convince the unsuspecting Warbucks that they are Annie’s parents.  With the help of his assistant Grace (Karina Riches), Warbucks is able to uncover the truth and foil the scheme.

With award-winning songs such as Tomorrow, A Hard Knock Life and You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile, “Annie” will entertain audiences of all ages.  Whether it’s because of the message of hope which the musical offers or watching the amazing talents of so many actors, musicians, and artists, don’t be surprised if you find your eyes moistening during AIS-R’s upcoming production of “Annie”.
