High School Academic Program

High School Program

Our mission guides every decision made at the school and serves as both the starting point and goal of an AIS-R education.  As grounded in our mission, AIS-R provides a holistic, values-driven education that develops inquisitive, independent and resilient young people who engage with positive change in their communities.  AIS-R is deeply committed to providing a comprehensive, college preparatory curriculum, implemented by superior faculty and staff. The high expectations and standards of our academic program prepare students for success in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP at AIS-R) in their final two years and in admission to competitive universities around the world (High School Course Catalog).

Our well-articulated learning outcomes create a community where AIS-R students can develop knowledge, understanding and relevant skills.  The elements of an AIS-R education include challenging academics, robust co- and extracurricular activities, experiential education, personal and social education and service that gives each student age-appropriate opportunities to develop qualities and skills that meet individual educational goals and thereby fulfill our mission.  All students enrolled at AIS-R are given the opportunity to tailor a program of study that will prepare them for their best fit college or university.  Our Grades 9 and 10 curriculum is based on Common Core, AERO and NGSS standards, while in Grades 11 and 12 most students follow the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP).

AIS-R offers a rich tradition with local connection, academically  rigorous programs, inquiry-based learning experiences but AIS-R also offers so much more.  We understand the importance of feeling a sense of social and emotional belonging and the need for each student to pursue their passions and to understand themselves and their own strengths.

Education as a Force for Change

AIS-R believes that education is a wellspring for positive local and global change.  This is clearly articulated in our Mission Impacts and Strategies and brings our Mission to life with AIS-R graduates engaged in individual and collective action in support of our Mission.  This involves engaging in difficult and complex discussions, thinking systematically and balancing complex ideas regarding people and cultures.  AIS-R’s diverse community is a microcosm of the globalized world and our academic program is crafted to prepare our students to inspire positive change while valuing diverse perspectives.

AIS-R HS Diploma

AIS-R offers a college preparatory program aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), AERO and Common Core Standards. The program also focuses on inquiry-based learning approaches throughout the core subjects; English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Languages and a variety of electives that provide our students with a solid foundation as they prepare for university success. AIS-R promotes the intellectual and personal growth of its students through well-balanced curricular offerings that look to address students' passions, as well as challenge their academic development.

Fine and Performing Arts Department

The Arts Program at AIS-R is fundamental to all students and is intended to establish an aesthetic awareness and appreciation of music, drama, and visual arts. Through the study of fine arts, students will enrich their lives by creating, listening to, and performing in different art fields. As they continue to study and gain experience, each student’s vocabulary, value judgment, perception and critical thinking skills will likewise sharpen. These experiences will encourage the development of self-discipline and instill a desire for lifelong learning. Classes include but are not limited to Studio Art, Film Production, DP Visual Art, Drama, DP Theatre, and Concert Band.

Physical Education and Health

At AIS-R students will develop health-related fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes about physical activity so that they can make lifelong wellbeing (physical, social, mental and emotional, spiritual) enhancing decisions. They will derive personal satisfaction from active participation and develop the intrinsic motivation for an active lifestyle. Students will develop social skills and understand social responsibility in a physical activity context.

Experiential Learning

We provide students with creative and differentiated learning experiences throughout our high school program to ensure students achieve personal excellence through a variety of thoughtfully planned experiential opportunities.  From working alongside local, national, and international organizations during internships to experiencing the richness international travel has to offer through our Week Without Walls trips, AIS-R students enjoy meaningful learning to enhance the AIS-R experience.

Support Services

AIS-R offers additional support services for students who demonstrate mild to moderate learning needs. By Grades 11 and 12 we expect all students to have developed an academic level of proficiency in English in order to be successful in the IB Diploma courses offered.  AIS-R’s Learning Support combines in-class support, small group instruction and individual targeted support for students identified as needing additional interventions. The overall  goal  of  the  Learning Support  program  is  to develop the academic skills of students  with  learning  needs so they can develop into  successful  and  independent  learners.
